Our design philosophy involves taking our mission statement to meet the needs of the home owner and then trying to match the style of architecture that best exemplifies that design. The focus, while trying to satisfy the client, is to strike a balance with a design style that works well with the floor plan and the exterior finishes. For our Urban Series we have focused predominantly on elegance of traditional styles used almost a century ago while maintaining the function of modern design emphasizing the lifestyle of the modern homeowner.
Three styles that have traditionally been a part of the Arts and Crafts Movement are the Craftsman, Prairie and Tudor Revival styles.
The Craftsman Style
The Craftsman style evolved from the Arts and Crafts movement, which started in the 1860's in Europe, as a reaction to the over-decoration of the Victorian style . The Arts and Crafts movement celebrated the art and talents of skilled craftsman, instead of the mass production of machine made components.
The Prairie Style
The Prairie Style was conceived by Frank Lloyd Wright, at the close of the 19th century, as are reaction to the classical revival styles of the day. The long horizontal lines of the roof overhangs, balustrades and windows, re-enforced the aesthetic of the long lines of the horizon of the prairies, where the style was based. Roofs had a low pitch, with deep overhangs.
The Tudor Revival Style
This revival style was very popular in the 1920's and 1930's. Sometimes they were referred to as Elizabethan or 'half timbered' houses. The style featured one and half storied plans, half timbering and brick work often laid up in patterns. Front doors were wood and often detailed. Brick chimneys were massive and prominent.
